What does the percentage calculator calculate?
Use this percentage calculator to solve common percentage problems from everyday life, finance, school, discounts, price changes and taxes. The calculator shows several useful percentage results at once.
Formulas
Percentage value = Base value × Percentage rate ÷ 100 Percentage rate = Percentage value ÷ Base value × 100 Base value = Percentage value ÷ (Percentage rate ÷ 100) Increased value = Base value × (1 + Change rate ÷ 100) Decreased value = Base value × (1 - Change rate ÷ 100)
Example
20% of 250 is 50. If a price of €250 increases by 20%, the new value becomes €300. If it decreases by 20%, €200 remain. These differences are especially important in everyday calculations.
What does the percentage calculator calculate?
The calculator determines the percentage value based on base value and percentage rate, the percentage rate based on part value and base value, and the base value when percentage value and rate are known. It also shows how a value changes when increased or decreased by a percentage.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between percentage value, percentage rate and base value?
The base value is the full original amount. The percentage rate is the share expressed in percent. The percentage value is the concrete amount represented by that share.
Why are plus 20% and minus 20% not the same?
Because each calculation is based on the current base value. An increase of 20% followed by a decrease of 20% does not return exactly to the starting value.
What is percentage calculation used for in everyday life?
For discounts, price increases, VAT, interest, statistics, salary increases, grades, comparisons and returns.
Can I use this calculator for discounts?
Yes. A percentage decrease is very useful for calculating discounts, markdowns or losses in value.
Is the result binding?
